Fall Floods

Yesterday started out like this -

...and today started out like this -

Last night I checked the school district web site, and I noticed that school was cancelled. I told the children and went to bed. They stayed up and watched a show on hulu.

I got up early and went around town to see what the rain had done. Saying there is a lot of water out there is an understatement.

I got out before there were too many people looking. I took pictures everywhere I went. To see the complete album go to http://gallery.me.com/dawn.asay/100386

I did hear that 2 of the 3 creeks in town have peaked and the waters are receding. That is good news.

P.S. We are fine at our house.

Sweet Senses

It started raining yesterday, so I started this:

and this is what it is...

It made all of these for us to enjoy (and share).

I love the smell of bread rising, and I love the smell of bread baking. Of course I love the taste of the bread. What I love more is the sound of family and friends gobbling it up, and what I love most is the sight of the satisfied smiles as they do so.

As I mentioned, it started raining yesterday, and it hasn't let up. Our sump pump is working overtime.

I have my window cracked, and it is truly peaceful to hear the rain fall on the rooftops, and the leaves, and the windows, and the roads, and the...

Today the children waited in the garage for the bus to come. Emily started out down at the "stop," but soon came and found refuge. Claire and Eli joined her in the garage.

When they saw the bus, they decided to venture out. The girls chose to use their umbrellas. Instead of pushing them all the way up, they just held them up so that they would be easier to close.
Eli on the other hand, is too cool to use an umbrella (actually he thinks the dome umbrella is too childish - I think if he had a "real" umbrella he would use it), so he waited a few seconds longer and then dashed out to the bus.

Emily is supposed to run the mile today at school, I don't think that will happen in this weather.

This weather causes me to want to make soup and bake some more. Who knows what senses I will use today!

1st Day of School

The children started school today. I think the skies are sad. It was a cold, windy morning. It is fifty-five degrees and winds at 31 miles per hour. It makes for a cold morning.

We didn't do anything fun for breakfast, Caleb and Eli had oatmeal, because it sticks with them all day.

The girls had cereal because I didn't want to argue.

It has been a tradition that I take a picture of the children with the number of fingers up for the grade they are in...

Because it was a little chilly, the children waited in the garage. Then they started admiring the "bike."

They lined up their bags so that the bus driver would be able to see that there were children waiting.

The bus was about 10-15 minutes late - probably from all of those crazy camera carrying parents who needed pictures on the first day of school.

They all heard the bus, so they decided to line up.

The bus arrived, and they all went and got on.

Not one of them looked back and waved good-bye. I am getting exactly what I wanted, independent children, but a wave or an "I love you!" would have been nice.

Summer Vacation - The 3rd Adventure - Day One

Out of this...came all of these...
We arrived in Green River, Utah on Thursday morning and set up camp. Once all of the tents were set up and everyone had full bellies, we decided to head out toward the river to "play."

The current was a little stronger than the children expected, so the boys had to swim out and rescue the boat (and their cousin/sister).

Eli and a cousin decided they would give it a try, but the carried the boat up the river a little farther, so they could end at the dock.

Claire wanted to give the boat a try, however, she was only allowed to stay right by the dock.

The grown-up were all tuckered out from getting up early to make the drive and from setting up camp.

They were a little dirty, too.

One of my nephew's decided that his father needed to be cooled off.

Funny side note: My brother and sister-in-law have six children. In order for them to get moving Thursday morning, my bro-in-law told the gang that he would get them all water guns if everyone was totally packed and in the car by a certain time. He kept reminding them as the time got closer. It worked. At the designated time, their vehicle rolled out of their driveway. My sis-in-law asked her husband where he planned to stop to get water guns, and he proudly announced that he already bought them. He pulled out his label maker and they put labels on all of the guns.

Many of the cousins decided that they would run down the dock and jump into the water.

It wasn't too long before we went back to get some dinner. We had build your own salads. It was a perfect meal for the hot day.

some of the preparations

The older cousins enjoyed being together,

and the younger cousins did, too.

After dinner we went back down to the river and were surprised to find this:

It didn't stop our fun, we continued to play. On of the uncles decided he would ride his bike down the ramp and into the water.

here he is going off the dock

Several of the adults watched.

These next few pictures crack me up because my sister caught some of Emily and me - do you think we are related:

I got these - here is my niece and her mother - do you think they are related?

The girls had fun playing in the sludge on the side of the river.

Now in this picture, can you guess which one is related to the people in the previous two pictures?

Brett gave many of these while he was there.

For dessert, we had ice cream, and I think she enjoyed it the most.

When it got dark, we played some group games. One of them was rock, paper, scissors. It was funny to watch how confused everyone was getting.

Here they are getting ready to play.

The first day was a success!
